Warranty Issues after 4k Miles
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
These came on my Litespeed Ultimate Gravel. These seem to do the job, but as a heads up they apparently have an issue with the elastomer (not sure what the part is called) failing, to where the caliper does not spring back out fully. Fortunately Shimano provides a 3-year warranty that I am pursuing. I probably spend more time on the road than off road, with no hills or mountains, so probably no harder on them than the average user. I have also been plagued with intermittent rubbing for as long as I have had them, though I cannot say that is necessarily the fault of the caliper.

These are working just fine on my bike using RS685 shift levers (i.e. the "old" versions before Ultegra), though I'm getting some uneven pad wear since I installed it ~1600 miles ago. IMPORTANT POINTS: 1) The "rear" brake caliper doesn't come with the adapter plate shown in the image! That's *really* annoying, since my bike required the adapter for the rear brake when using a 160mm rotor. 2) I *think* the front caliper comes with the adapter by default, hence the weight difference shown by Competitive Cyclist, but it's worth double-checking. 3) The actual calipers are identical, so I think the only difference between "front" and "rear" is whether the adapter plate is included. Some bikes can run 140mm rotors on the rear with no adapter, but many will need the adapter to run 160mm rotors on the rear. On most bikes, the front adapter is required regardless of 140mm or 160mm rotor size. I hope that saves somebody some trouble! Just buy two "front" calipers if you need the adapter plates on both the front and rear. Or buy the adapter plate separately if it makes sense in terms of overall price. ---------- For those mixing and matching old levers with new calipers: I purchased a new frame that had *flat mount* instead of *post mount* for the brakes. I was able to use a post mount adapter on the front to re-use my old R785 calipers, but there wasn't enough clearance on the rear of the bike to use the adapters, hence this purchase of the modern Ultegra calipers. Huge hassle to figure that out and I wasted money on post mount adapters for the rear that I couldn't use. Looking back, the cost of the post mount to flat mount adapter ($20) is 1/3 of the cost of getting a proper flat mount caliper, so I should have gone all-in and replaced both calipers with flat mount versions. Plus, the post mount to flat mount adapters are ugly and ungainly looking.
