Why We Like The Shimano Dura-Ace CS-R9100 11-Speed Cassette
Shimano's groupsets often often miss call-outs for European elegance or relentless pursuit of weight loss at all cost and innovation for innovation's sake, instead earning their loyal following through the incredible dependability and meticulous engineering of the Dura-Ace CS-R9100 11-Speed Cassette. 9100 isn't a typo there, it is, in fact, a newly reworked version of Dura-Ace. When the brand introduces a new groupset, you can be sure it's actually boasting improvements you don't have to be Porte or Stannard to detect on a routine Sunday in the saddle.
Since Dura-Ace is the top-tier drivetrain in the Shimano road lineup, you might be surprised that only the largest five cogs are titanium. That's because—though it's lighter—titanium is generally more prone to wear than nickel-plated steel, and the smaller cogs are more prone to wear than the larger. Because of these material properties, Shimano only uses titanium where the softer metal doesn't create a significant negative impact.

Another top shelf piece of Shimano gear!
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I'd venture to say that the primary reason for spending the extra $$$ for this Dura-Ace cassette would be for the weight savings (my scale shows 175g for the 11-25t, not including the lock ring). The shift quality feels the same as the Ultegra cassette that it replaced. There is concern that the titanium cogs (used for the five largest cogs, only) may wear faster than their steel counterparts. I'm running this cassette with a waxed chain, so I'm hoping that this will extend the service life of the cassette. Only time will tell...

What can I say about the most advanced cassette in the world. Pricey, yes but beautifully designed and executed. Lightweight avenue to precise shifts.

The 12-28 has the 16-tooth sprocket!

I upgraded from the usual 11-28 Ultegra to the 12-28 DA for the 16-tooth sprocket. So nice to have a 15-16-17 midrange cadence transition, and I used the 11 rarely. Expensive, but worth it. The titanium big gears seem to be wearing well. No issues.

Installation goes off without a hitch, have no problems. My last cassette lasted over 10k miles with UFO lube and proper care otherwise. No problems whatsoever.
