Why We Like The Santa Cruz 5010 C GX Eagle Transmission Reserve Mountain Bike
Whether we are tearing up our local singletrack or sending it at the jump lines, we choose the Santa Cruz 5010 again and again for its agile and playful handling and all-out fun attitude. With a lightweight frame, mixed-wheel setup, 130mm of VPP suspension, and aggressive geometry, the 5010 has all the ingredients to make a bike that is downright fun. With a 65.2-degree head tube angle in the high setting, the 5010 is not only a blast to ride but also extremely capable. Short size-specific chainstays ensure a poppy and playful rear end for every size frame, and a steep 77-degree seat tube angle allows us to be in a perfect climbing position when it's time for another lap. This revised version of the 5010 has less anti-squat than the previous version to reduce pedal kickback and provide better traction, and more linear leverage with a sharp increase in progressiveness allows for a more supportive mid-stroke and aids in bottom-out resistance and soaking up big hits in the last bit of travel. The 5010 features a chainstay and downtube protector to protect from chain slaps and rock strikes, and a shuttle guard allows us to drive to the trailhead with our bike in the back of our truck bed. When we are planning on hitting some more technical and steep trails for the day, the flip chip in the rear shock link allows us to make the 5010 lower, longer, and slacker for more confidence when things get rowdy. When we need a bike that rips, the Santa Cruz 5010 is our weapon of choice.
The GX Eagle Transmission AXS Reserve build of the Santa Cruz 5010 gives us quality components, carbon wheels, and the latest technology in electronic drivetrains at a more budget-friendly price point. First, Santa Cruz's Carbon C frame gives us a stiff and lightweight frame and is made to the same standards as Santa Cruz's Carbon CC frame but at a slight weight penalty. RockShox's Select+ series gives us quality suspension performance, fitting us with the Pike Select+ up front with 140mm of travel to soak up the big hits and a Super Deluxe Select+ in the rear to provide ground-gripping traction around every berm. SRAM's GX Eagle Transmission AXS drivetrain gives us the latest tech in the electronic drivetrain world, providing us with a near-bombproof design, flawless shifting, and the same huge gear range. SRAM Code Bronze Stealth 4-piston brakes ensure great modulation and, combined with SRAM premium HS2 rotors, provide loads of stopping power. Finally, Reserve's 30HD and 30 SL carbon rims are super lightweight, durable, and give us reliable handling.
*Due to a high demand in the global supply chain and bike industry since the start of the pandemic, material weight and exact components are subject to change. We are working diligently to keep tech specs updated, and any adjustments will be of equal or better spec level. Playful Ride
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I'll admit I was mixed wheel curious but hesitant to move away from the 29in trail bikes I've become accustomed to. Last minute I decided to give this 5010 a try and instantly fell in love with the way it rides. The 5010 has always been one of the most playful bikes in the Santa Cruz range and this newest version is no exception. The 29in wheel up front aids in better rollover and adds additional traction when cornering and braking. The 27.5in wheel out back brings the party and is eager to whip around a tight turn or mid air for some style points. The smaller wheel out back makes a noticeable difference when riding super steep fall-line trails where getting the rear wheel out of the way is ideal for traction and composure. I may have been skeptical of mixed wheel bikes but after riding and owning this one I'm sold. This bike is super playful, plenty efficient for long days in the saddle, and offers all the capability I need in a trail bike. If you're mixed wheel curious I encourage you to get out on a MX bike and see if it's for you, too.
