Why We Like The Porter 30L Backpack

It's hard to say whether Osprey's Porter 30 Backpack is more of a backpack or duffel bag. As a backpack, the Porter can carry a day's worth of trail essentials for long hikes. As a duffel, the Porter is easily carried through airports during quick weekend getaways. Multiple zippered access points to the main compartment allow for easy access whether you have the Porter as a pack or a bag. The Porter's massive pocket configuration includes a dedicated sleeve for laptops, a front organizer for travel documents, and a zippered top pocket for easy access to liquids.

Fabric is a major downgrade for the entire Porter line

I've had two of the former Porter models having used them for over 10 years for years of international business travel. The earlier models had a slick exterior fabric that showed very little sign of wear. The latest model I bought from the moment I laid it down being black looks like it's scuffed. Will attract hairs and dust and really look unprofessional especially in the black or blue color. The other olive drab looks too militaristic. Also I found the zipper snags on an seam inside the pack. Every time I open/close from the zipper makes me worry that zipper pull is going to come off.

Used to be great packs...

The Porters used to be really cool packs. Lots of great organization features, durability, and easy to tote. Seems like a perfect formula, right? Well, the latest iteration of these packs with the ""new and improved"" recycled nylon are terrible if you encounter pet hair, dirt, lint, or anything else that likes to stick to things. The newer Porters have been ruined, in my opinion, due to the new materials selection Osprey has used. If you are going to pick one of these up, be warned. I would recommend waiting until the next version comes out - where, hopefully, Osprey fixes this problem.

Awesome pack with a few flaws...

I got my partner this pack as a gift, and she loved it! Brilliant organization and features. I decided to get my own, and am really disappointed with the ""new"" recycled materials they use on this pack. Her's is a sleek bag, that hardly shows dirt/wear, but mine is a DIRT MAGNET -it shows every little scuff/rub, and hair/pet hair stick to it like a magnet. I would say the new pack is a downgrade from the Gen2 Porter 30. I'm frustrated that the new product doesn't have the fit and finish of the previous ones - especially with the 20% price increase the new ones carry. I'm probably going to try to sell mine and get an older one - which is frustrating... Otherwise, it's an awesome bag with great features, but that is a major flaw in my opinion.

Buckles Break - Heat or Sun?

I travel by air, public transit and etc. A 30 liter Porter carries three days of touring and camping packability included with ultralight gear, dehydrated meals and Camelback water reserve. NONE OF THIS WORKS WHEN THE BUCKLES BREAK EASY AND THE STRAPS CAN'T BE SECURED.

Sturdy and Large Capacity for Med/Long Overseas Travel

We have taken 2 trips to Africa and 3 to Asia the past 7 years each between 20-30 days. This has been my primary baggage mostly as a carry on item. Yes we have had to do laundry along these adventures. I usually take 3-4 sets of pants/shorts and 6-9 shirts all lightweight underclothes and light long sleeve tshirt ir jacket. I always put it in an overhead bin I think it would be a major push to say it would fit underneath a seat. I always bring a smaller pack to carry essential meds, electronics etc that never leaves my immediate possession. We have taken trips with as many as 12 flights so toting this pack on/off planes-ground transport and through airports can be done with straps on my shoulder/back or using handles. I can fit a ton of stuff in it and because the clothing is for mostly tropical climates, it has never weighed more than 22 lbs stuffed to the gills. I have actually carried it on a Ryan Air flight although it was ever so slightly oversize. It has been a winner throughout some pretty rigorous travel, very durable and versatile.

Great for traveling with a toddler

This was an excellent carry-on for traveling with a toddler. I needed to have my hands free for kid wrangling/stroller pushing, but also wanted enough stuff (changes of clothes, snacks, toys, wipes) to make the flight a fun experience. Combining this pack with the daylite plus, I had extra space even with laptops and travel toys. I appreciated the big ""liquids pocket"" for snack pouches in addition to toiletries. The daylite plus fit well on the porter even with 2 water bottles in the side pockets. The way the porter is designed, having the daypack attached didn't hinder accessing most of the zipped compartments! When we got on the plane, I separated the two packs, put the porter 30 under the seat in front of my kiddo and the daylite under the seat in front of me. No messing with the overhead bin and all the things to make the flight smooth!

Great minimal travel pack

The Porter 30 is an amazing, do all, one bag travel pack. It is small enough to fit in any overhead storage compartment as well as under plane/train seats without issue without giving up internal storage space. The clamshell design and boxy interior make the most of available volume and works well with packing cubes so you do not have ""dead space"" in your pack. This also allows the pack to sit well on your back for long periods of time without discomfort or being a nuisance to you and others in crowds. My only cons are that there are: 1) No exterior stash pockets for a water bottle so, if you travel with an insulated mug or a nalgene type bottle, you either have to clip it to the outside or stick it in the pack, taking up valuable interior storage. 2) The waist belt is not removable and the shoulder straps clip to the belt, rather than the pack itself. If you do not want to use the belt, you have to clip the shoulder straps in, then feed the belt through its stowaway pocket and secure it in there with the buckle. I wish there was a more simple option as not everyone needs/uses belts on smaller or lighter bags.

Great Carry On

I've had this for years. I use this as my Go To bag when I travel. It's got plenty of space if you pack smart, and it fits under the seat in most airline cabins, except maybe the smaller planes. The ability to tuck away the straps is awesome for that purpose. It's size and solid construction makes it the ideal carry on bag. It's not weather proof, but I was caught in rain with it once. The bag got wet, but everything was dry inside. I could see how it might get uncomfortable after hours of wearing it, but I haven't had an issue yet. It's a travel pack, not a hiking pack.

Great bag but missing a water bottle holder

Don't recommend this bag. I bought this for multi use - backpacking it's a carryon. Brilliant until you realize that it's missing a very basic feature. It does not have a water bottle carrier on the side. Only way is to attach to carabiner in the front of the bag. And that is a nightmare if you have a large bottle. You have to stop, remove the bag which is painful and makes you lose time. Other option is to put a hydration reservoir but it's no designed for it. You can put a reservoir in the laptop sleeve only if you are not carrying a laptop. Osprey need to either add a water bottle net or provide an add-on attachment which can potentially clip in to duffle bag slips. Makes so sense to get this one.

Nice One

Perfect for carry on. Durable. Classy. I go back and forth from the US and Africa as needed so I was looking for a product that I could use to pack maybe 10 outfits and I found it :raised_hands::skin-tone-6::raised_hands::skin-tone-5: No more checked bags for me :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
