Why We Like The Back-Roller Classic Panniers

Ortlieb's been innovating bike-specific storage since cycling became popular in Germany, and while it says Classic in the title, the Back-Roller Classic Panniers are anything but classic for us bike touring cyclists across the pond. Their most unique feature is the QL2.1 system that lets you mount and release each pannier with a simple pull of a handle. Each pannier automatically locks onto the rack the moment you mount it; it's compatible with 16mm racks, but Ortlieb includes hook inserts to fit 8, 10, and 12mm racks as well. The QL2.1 system also features a semi-elliptical hook at the bottom that you can adjust and rotate to fit your rack so the pannier doesn't bounce as much as regular panniers.

Ortlieb made the rest of the Back-Roller Classic Pannier out of material that's complementary to the QL2.1 system. Ortlieb's rugged PD260, PS490, and IP64 fabrics shed water spray and rocky debris most commonly found on cross-country tours. The roll-top closure blocks all the dust when you're riding in the desert, and then prevents raindrops from seeping through when you're searching for shelter in forested, mountainous environments. Ortlieb also added 3M Scotchlite reflectors to further enhance the visibility needed to ride in low light.

Excellent panniers!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

After a bike trip in the Netherlands, I came home looking for panniers like the ones that kept my stuff dry and protected through days of riding in wind and pouring rain. These were exactly like the ones on the tour and I like them just as much on my bike at home. They are the best!

Well built

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Used these on a recent 500m bike packing trip. Great quality, easy to use. 2 on the rear fit just about all of my clothing, sleeping bag, pillow, and food. If you are bike packing, consider the hi-viz models they offer. My friend used those and I feel like it's a no brainer to choose them for extra safety.

Got for my father in law

Familiarity:
I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Got it for my father-in-law and he is very pleased! The panniers can hold so much stuff, perfect for his grocery store commutes. The only thing is I wish they sold single panniers instead of the pair because one pannier is enough for him. They are also very easy to adjust and take on off, all you need to do is pull up on the handle!

One Pannier Broke within 3 uses

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've been using one of the Panniers for over a month with no issues. Very happy with the water tight seal. However, I started using the second one this week and the stitching snapped on the pull over strap with a very minimal pull to make it waterproof. The build quality is terrible on the strap with it breaking after < 30 minutes of use. I am still waiting on Ortlieb's response - not the fastest either. Pretty frustrating I can't use both right now when I need them for work. Not impressed 1 out of 2 has bad build quality with the price. I will leave an update pending any response from Ortlieb

Amazing Panniers

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I purchased these for running errands and ultimately to tour with in the future. It's nice being able to go grocery shopping with these knowing I can place up to 20 pounds in each pannier. They held up nicely in the rain while coming home from shopping. The inside of each pannier was completely dry. Each pannier can be customized to fit different rack sizes and has a hook you can use to keep your pannier from moving too much. Overall, these are top-notch panniers and I strongly recommend adding them to your biking family!
